Kyoyochi pond was made in the 12th century, until recently it was known for it's mandarin ducks and so Ryoanji was generally known as Oshidoridera (the temple of mandarin ducks). The island in the middle is named Bentenjima, it is where an image of Sarasvati is being housed.
